Best. Game. Ever. That's my summary for this amazing RPG. It completely blew away my expectations and was a HUGE leap in the series, in my opinion. But anyway, on with the review: Graphics: Nothing amazing for today. Blocky characters and pretty good CG stuff makes it okay, but the characters just, like, completely change from the field to battle. When walking around and stuff, they look like they're little kids, undetailed, little blocky kids. But, when gone into battle, they change into detailed, pretty good looking (for PS1) guys that look nothing like children (quite a jump!). But none of that matters because I really don't care about graphics.
Gameplay: RPG style turnbased gameplay at it's best. The battle system is amazingly made and has it's cool little effects like mindblowing summon spells and cool to watch limit break attacks when your character's get pummeled to much. But the weird thing about battle is that it really doesn't ever get old for some reason! No matter how many goblins and dragons you kill, you'll want to keep doing it again, and again, and again, and again until you finish the 60 hour quest spanning 3 disks (!). Yes the game is that long, I beat just an hour over that NOT getting yuffie or the other optional guy ( can't rememer his name at the moment) or getting any of the ultimate weapons or doing any of the sidequests...that's saying something! In other words: RPG-ing at it's best baby!
storyline: This is where the game REALLY kicks in. Being the best storyline I've ever seen since beyond good and evil, it's one of those RPG's you level up your guys as much as you can just to see what happens at the next cutscene. It starts out with cloud jumping out of a hijacked train doing a mercenary job for a rebel group called AVALANCHE that want to save the planet from an evil corporation called the shinra that are sucking the power right out of the planet! So cloud soon gets involved more and more in the AVALANCHE's quest and the storyline takes off from there (you don't think i'm going to reveal the WHOLE storyline, do you?). But yeah, and amazing story SO good, it's getting a movie sequel!
Sound: another amazing point of the gameplay. The soundtrack is your usual choir and orchestra stuff, but it's actually really good! So good, I got the soundtrack to it! The stuff just sounds "right" and fits in with the game'setting
Lasting value: With all the side quests and the 60+ hour main story quest, it's gonna take over your life until you start the 8'th one (even maybe after that too!). Honestly, the game has THREE DISCS. That should be enough to convince you that the game has lasting appeal.
Overall: The best RPG i've ever played (and yes that includes Chrono Trigger!)
