Well, I've finally gotten his hands on a borrowed copy of Guitar Hero II. And I must say, it is awesome. I would even go as far to say that it's much much better than #1 in many ways.
I'm gonna start with the soundtrack. Every song on here has it's own flow and feel so that every song is well... different. Take the beginning songs. Shout at the Devil, Mother, Surrender, Woman, and Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight. Each of these songs has equally fun to play guitar parts and bass parts and they really don't get old unless you play them non-stop. As you go on, you'll discover different genres of music in this game. There's the psuedo egyptian jam "YYZ" from 80's legend Rush, the grunge classic "Heart Shaped Box" from Nirvana, and even the southern rock anthem "Freebird" by Lynard Synard. The songs on here don't get old even after 15 hours (Which is about how far I'm into it.). There's something here everyone can enjoy. Even Strong Bad and DETHKLOK (from metalocalypse) make an appearance in here with the secret songs "Thunderhorse" and "Trogdor". And all us homestar runner fans want to play a metal version of Trogdor....it's pretty sweet.
But has the gameplay adapted well with the great music? Well, the answer is a not suprising "yes". The bass and guitar parts in this game are ,for the most part, fun to play for either beginners or pro's. But for you beginners, I reccomend picking up the original one first and mastering that at least a bit. Why you ask? Well...this game is really hard. Some of the songs are easier to play on real guitar than they are one here sometimes. But still, all the training is fun and worth the effort. Because in the final moments of "Freebird" when you're nailing every note on the 4 minute solo...it just feels amazing. Especially in front of a group of admirers at Best Buy (It's fun to show off your skills!). I also love how they changed the hammer on/ pull off technique. You no longer have to hold down the previous buttons to do it right. That helps me so much on the longer solos it isn't even funny. So for the most part the gameplay is great...but there are a few problems. Some of the bass guitar parts are completely BORING. Although, this balances out because some of them are better than the main guitar part ("YYZ" for example). Well, you people have nothing to worry about here.
But what about the sound quality? Well, the cover band they use in this game does a pretty good job. But in some songs, they completely butcher the main singer's voice ("Beast and the Harlot" is a great example of this. The singer is terrible there.), but these happen very rarely. The songs are all very clear with the guitar, bass, and rythm guitar parts and they work very well with the gameplay. There are no bad songs on here and it sounds amazing on a giant speaker.
Well, I think that this is the best music game every created. Some people may dissagree that the original was better, but I say no. I love the soundtrack, it's more of a challenge, and they improved the gameplay a bit more in alot of the lacking areas. It's longer, more rockin', and longer lasting than the first one and I reccomend you put this on your list to buy right now. Anybody who loves rockin' music will love this game. Period. Go buy this now if you like awesomeness. If you don't...I don't like you. 10/10. One of the greatest games ever made.
