Far Cry is an excellent FPS. It is a graphically intense game, requiring lots of video juice to give it a proper treatment. But if you have the system to run it, the result is flat out gorgeous. The story takes place on an expansive tropical island, isolated from the rest of the world. I was extremely impressed with how well the developers pulled off the feeling of a real tropical island. There are tons of panoramic views that just beg to be looked at rather than played. Lots of foliage, both above ground, as well as underwater. Native wildlife is abundant in the form of mostly fish, and birds, as well as the occasional medically mutated lunatic humanoid. Sound is very complimentary to the feel of paradise. Of particular beauty I felt the night scene on the ocean was well done.
It took about fifteen to twenty hours of playing time to complete the single player mode. It could have been longer, but I did not feel cheated in the experience. The end of the game was rather abrupt with no seeming attempt made at an emotional payoff. But I won't remember the story much anyway, the game's greatest attribute are the graphics and highly detailed environments. And hanggliders to enjoy it were an unexpected treat.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone with a higher end system. I did not play the multiplayer portion of the game, so I can give no opinion there.
My only real gripe would involve a lackluster ending, and perhaps a shortage of monster types. I always played on expecting eventually I would run into some gargantuan mega-monster, but then never did.
