There are so many rally games on the console market right now, but the colin mcrae series has always been one of the best examples of the genre, mixing realism with fast and smooth gameplay.
The graphics are truly spectacular, and thats important since the genre restricts the landscapes you can used. The tracks now have a more gritty look compared to the last game, and the cars look superb, espeically the real-time damage.
Colin Mcrae 4 is a traditional rally game, so it follows the real sport pretty closely, with shakedown and testing sessions, before the actual stages itself. If you like to race other cars, you should try Rally Sport Challenge or Shox on the PS2.
The cars all handle beautifully and you can unlock classic cars when you complete the gam. The controls are similar to just about every racing game on the xbox, but colin 4 makes perfect use of the analogue triggers. If you press down the gas to fast when exiting corners, you will slide......
Overall, the game lacks a degree of authenticity because you don't get the real driver line-ups or the real rally stages. It makes up for it though, in the gameplay, and this is the definite rally game for purists.
