Gothic was one of the first true 3D RPG's I've played. It has a great story, a fantastic world (an enormous island within a magic prison) and a dark setting that's both intriguing and frightening at the same time. You start out as a nobody, a petty criminal with nothing to his name. After a while inside the prison you figure out what to do and appr. 50 hours later you've figured out how to do it. During those hours you'll get to visit castles, ruins, swamps, dungeons, temples, caves, sunken cities, and so on. And the entire land loads in one go! The immersiveness of never having to load anything is fantastic. You walk in and out of buildings, caves, castles, anything and it never loads. It just flows on. Gothic also has NPC's that sleep, eat and go to work like real people do. they even sit down near campfires and chat with each other. The only things to complain about are the controls and its somewhat dated graphics. Although Gothic does make up for the lack of polygons with great viewing distance and well designed surroundings. Altogether an awesome game.
