GTA: San Andreas is one of those games that come around once every five years or so. GTA: Vice City, San Andreas predecessor, was a fantastic game and at the time of its release I was wondering if any GTA could ever top this. San Andreas could. Rockstar took what was good in Vice City and doubled, no tripled, no quadrupled.. crap, they blew everything about Vice City out of the water. The landmass in San Andreas is five times bigger than in Vice City (which was huge), the main mission is around 100 hours long (!), the car physics is almost perfect, there are tons of side missions, more different vehicles, weapons, crazy characters, hidden extras, bonus jumps, even some mythical and insanely difficult to find easter eggs. The voice cast is more impressive than ever (topped by Samuel L. Jackson and the fantastic James Woods), the soundtrack is awesome (even though it's not as good as in Vice City), and surprisingly the graphics have gotten a complete overhaul and manages to squeeze out more polygons on screen than ever. The added movement schemes of the main character (climbing, swimming and cycling) only adds to the already impressive list of new features, and the fact that you can shape the character to anything from a fat slob to a hulking bodybuilder (complete with different wardrobes) is just the icing on the cake. The few drawbacks of San Andreas are mostly technical; the framerate is anything but stable, the DVD player of the aging PS2 doesn't always have time to fill in the graphics for the faster vehicles and so on. Those complaints are fortunately only minor when put in perspective of the fantastic game that GTA: San Andreas really is.
