Final Fantasy, a name that is foremost in the minds of console RPG fans.  I am a big fan of the series and this game is the reason why.  Simply said the story for FF7 is beyond belief.  The story surrounds Cloud, an ex-member of a military group who has been holding a dark secret regarding events that happened years ago.  This story slowly unfolds in flashbacks as you learn the truth about the main character's past.  This game includes, arguably, the best villain in RPG history.  Through plot twists that tug at your emotions, you'll watch as Cloud and friends try to stop Sephiroth from achieving his sinister goal.  The futuristic plot is a stark contrast to the usual FF fare and is refreshing to any RPG fan.
The graphics for the game are amazing with plenty of amazing cutscenes that tell the story. Each major event is told through the use of these cutscenes with expert attention to detail.
The music is operatic in scope.  From the music when you first meet Sephiroth, to the numerous encounters with Jenova, to the truly operatic end battle music, FF7 is both epic in scope and in execution.
The combat system is fast-paced due to the Active Time Battle system, leading to involving boss battles.  Each battle becomes a true fight to stay alive.
The game includes many optional side quests that tell stories of the world and characters.  From Yuffie resolving issues at the pagoda, to Red XIII resolving the past with his father, the character's truly feel unique and a connection is made with caring for them.
One complaint is the fact that the main sidequest in the game is chocobo racing.  This mini-game is really boring after a few races and that brings down some of the experience as completing the races is the only way to unlock the best items.
If you are a fan of RPGs or great stories, play this opus brought to you by Squaresoft.  You won't be sorry that you did.
