Hearing of a Square-made game with Disney characters, one can be forgiven for wondering why anyone would make it and I was one of those people. To say the least, I don't like Disney or its characters. With that in mind, I was blown away by the actual enjoyment I had with Kingdom Hearts. While the plot is usual RPG fare, the way that the locations seamlessly flow is superb. In the game, you control Sora as he goes though various well known locations in the Disney universe. Along the way he meets manyof Disney's most famous characters who will help him travel toward the endgame. The bosses for the game are also well done with enough challenge in them to make it worthwhile. The battle system is very simple as you use the control pad to move between menu options while having free movement to attack. The action RPG elements are well done, though occasionally the camera blocks your view. You can switch out characters for ones based on the world you're currently in. The graphics seem very realistic on par with any type of animation done by Disney itself. All RPGs need sidequests and Kingdom Hearts is no exception, several quests lead to better items, including a quest to locate the Dalmatians. These sidequests unfortunately don't become more involved than that, or the Coliseum where you can battle through Cups to gain items and EXP. The controls are fairly precise. Unfortunately, several problems do crop up. The Gummi Ship quests between areas is original but uninteresting and detract from the game. The AI for your two partners in the game is lacking at best. Even changing their AI scripts does not prevent them from wasting items and attacking at poor times resulting in their deaths. These deaths become tiresome since it leaves Sora alone to fight against enemies (mainly bosses) that can be difficult for a single character to face. The speed of battle also means you rarely have enough time to use items safely to resurrect fallen characters. Still, considering my dislike of Disney and how much I enjoyed this game in spite of that fact, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a different kind of an RPG as well as those that are Disney fans.
