The first of the Metroid series to hit the GBA, Metroid Fusion takes the mythology of Samus Aran and expands it.  The story is set on a large research space station where experiments on Metroids is occurring.  An accident happens and a creature named X is created.  This parasite attaches itself to all organic life and drains lifeforce in a similar fashion to Metroids.  During a mission, Samus becomes infected with the X parasite.  Using a Metroid, doctors save her life but the procedure causes her to transform into a part X/part human.  She is sent to the station to uncover what has happened.
There are several areas in the station known as habitats.  Each one contains a similar ecosystem to an area of SR388.  During her travels throughout the station, she will encounter familiar foes that have been changed by the X including one unique creation that will threaten you throughout your quest.
The graphics are on par with Super Metroid and the action flows with great cutscenes to help move the story along.  The usual gameplay can be found in Fusion, including backtracking to older areas.  The only caveat I have is the fact that the game includes a mapping system that lets you know exactly where you need to be to continue the story.  It doesn't say how to get there but it spoils the sense of mystery that is required in any Metroid game.  Still, the first GBA Metroid game shows a bright 2D future for the series.
