It will be hard for any game to ever top the first experience of playing Super Mario 64. The feeling of running around outside Peach's castle, having finally laid my hands on that seemingly bizarre three-pronged controller, is something that will probably not be matched until we're all playing games with nothing more than our minds. It would have, however, all been for naught if the game wasn't well-designed and fun to play, but Super Mario 64 delivered big time, and time hasn't done much to change that. Every area - from level design, control, camera and so on - is so well handled that it's hard to believe this was a launch title. While some 3D platformers have come and improved upon this game's foundations, they are few and far between. Even Nintendo's own Super Mario Sunshine is arguably inferior. As such, this is a game that is as enjoyable today as it was the day it released, and the few who have yet to play it should do so as soon as possible.
