Guild Wars is distributed as a massively multiplayer online role playing game along the lines of Ever Quest of World of Warcraft, How ever the only areas of the game that are massively multiplayer are the outpost used for trading and crafting of goods and forming of parties. Once you party with up to 8 of your closest friends the game is more like Never Winter Nights or Diablo 2 in terms of it is just you and your party vs. NPCs. One advantage this system has over a standard MMORPG is there is no excessive server fee, requiring $14.00 a month player dues. So when you buy guild wars, you are good for life.
Game play in Guild Wars is similar to Never Winter Nights, or Diablo 2 in the fact that you level up through killing things. A nice feature of Guild Wars is the ability/requirement to customize your character between two of the six different professions such as a Warrior/Monk, or Archer/Elementals. Each primary profession has a specific bonus for the character that takes that other character cannot get by having the profession as their secondary. Once you have your Character customized it is time to get grouped up to do the main story line. The game play during the story line is similar to any other D&D style RPG, where your characters attacks are calculated through a series of algorithms and such, to determine damage given and taken. The levels are some what linear with one or two paths that tend to lead to an objective, but the maps are not completely free roaming, as mountains or rivers block your progression across the game world and force you into load/transition areas. Where Guild Wars is unique is that players can band together and form a guild, which than become a Player vs. player team for massive death match and capture the flag matches between guilds. Over all the game play fits the mold of a standard RPG with the added bonus of playing with and against your friends in PVP arenas. 9/10
Graphics in Guild Wars are by no means top of the line; however they are not by any means bad to look at. For those of us that have been playing never winter nights, or Diablo 2 the graphics in Guild wars are vastly superior. 9/10
Sounds FX in Guild Wars are well done, and the game has an orchestral sound track containing many songs to add atmosphere to the game… Other various sounds merely add to the fantasy aspects of the game. 10/10
Replay Value for Guild Wars is very high, a player is almost required to play though single player in order to unlock special abilities and weapons other wise locked to their PVP character. Also after a player is established though beating the storyline; the character is able to be used to partake in player vs. player and Guild vs. Guild battles. A Guild Wars also allows for each account to have 4 different characters, enough to use each of the 6 different professions. 9/10
