Final Fantasy VII confuses me. It was an inferior game for its time yet it is considered by many to be one of the best games of all times. I am confused.
All I can say to the few people who haven't played this game yet is to not believe the hype, it isn't that good. In fact I dare say it is the one of the weakest Final Fantasy releases in the US with the possible exception of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (ew).

(Story - 7.5/10) - This game hints at having a good story and good characters. But often falls short, most likely because of bad translation I imagine (spoony bards!). Cloud is everyones favorite FF character but he is just annoying to me. He lacks depth and he says 'I don't care.' or something like it probably about 1000 times (slight exaggeration). But hes got that huge ridiculous sword and spikey hair which is what I think fans adore.
However I really did enjoy going on a magical date with Barrett.
(Graphics 6/10) - I am rating the graphics for its time and they were not good. The pre-rendered backgrounds were beautiful, however the 3d rendered characters were just pathetic (popeye arms!). The combat graphics were average. I must have been spoiled by the good PC games released during that time (very few good PC games these days... sigh).
(Music 7.5/10) - Nobuo Uematsu has done some of the best music ever. However this game does not have it! There are probably 3 amazing tracks within 4 discs worth of crap. However it is different for Nobuo, so it may be good to those who otherwise do not enjoy Nobuo (like the 3 of you).
(Gameplay 8.5/10) - The fighting in this game is standard for FF games. The materia system involved equipping materia and learning abilities that can be used with them (and they grant abilities). Main problem was the length of time summons took. For those of you have played later FF titles this was before the ability to shorten the time it took to watch a summon. I literally had a roommate cook breakfast inbetween one (Knights of the Round x2). But otherwise good stuff.
