This game is ridiculously fun, and that's pretty much all there is to it.
OK, I'll elaborate. When I first bought the game, everyone I knew was skeptical, and few would even try it. After a few days, more and more people decided to give it a whirl. I bought a couple more bongos, and soon enough, everyone I knew was knee-deep in Konga Madness!
Donkey Konga is a music game from Nintendo that uses a specially designed Bongo Controller for input (you can also use a recular controller, but where's the fun in that?) The Bongo has two fairly large drum pads and a microphone to pick up clapping. There are 4 commands: left bongo, right bongo, both bongos and clap. The sensitivity for the clapping has a wide range, and can be changed in-game.
There are about 30 songs altogether, ranging from classic Nintendo tunes to Classical to Tito Puente to Blink 182. All of the songs with lyrics have been re-recorded with different singers, I assume to reduce the cost of inclusion. It's a really good variety, and it offers an expansive range of difficulty. There are three main difficulty levels, and each song has a relative difficulty rating from 1 to 10 in each level. To unlock the hardest difficulty level on each song, you must earn coins in the one-player mode and buy them at varying costs. There are also alternate Bongo sounds to buy, which range from barely passable to absolutely terrible.
Donkey Konga plays like any other rythem game: "notes" flow in from the right side of the screen, and you have to hit the right ones as they pass the activation point. The interface doesn't take much room, which allows for 4-player matches on a single screen. In addition to the single-player "Street Performance" there is also a 2-Player Battle mode, which tallys the points from the song, as well as a few amazingly well-integrated minigames. There is also a "Jam Session" mode, which is generally non-competitive and allows for 1 to 4 players at a time.
Honestly, the game isn't a great purchase by itself. The single-player portion runs out of steam pretty quick. To get an excellent experience out of this game, buy a couple more Bongos, grab a few friends, and drum the night away!
