When I first played Max Payne: The Fall of Max Payne on the Xbox, I found it to be one of the greatest sequels ever made. The story was even more twisted than the original and it improved on almost everything from the first game. Last month while wondering around my local Gamestop I came across Max Payne: The Fall of Max Payne brand new on the ps2 for only two dollars. I figured right away that the story would be worth going through again for that price. In some ways I was right and in some ways I was wrong.
My main complaint about this version of the game is that there is not an auto save feature anywhere in the game. You can do as many quick saves as you want, but the story is so engrossing that you completely forget about the quick saves. When you die, you will be going back so far in the game that you will contemplate whether or not you even want to keep on playing because you will be so frustrated with the game. That hands down has the be the game's main flaw.
That however is not the game's only flaw sadly. The Max Payne games have never been the prettiest games out there, but this one does not look very good at all or at least the game has not aged well at all. The bullet time still looks cool however. Max Payne: The Fall of Max Payne had an overall grittier feel to it than the first one did. The Ps2 version almost over does it and in the end it does not look as good as the Xbox and the PC versions of the game.
The one thing that is an update over the first installment on the PS2 is that this game feels more like the Xbox version than the first one did. The first one had some minor control and gameplay issues, that at first you didn't really notice all that much, but then when you play it on the Xbox you realize what you have been missing. So for this game in the controls and gameplay section it is an upgrade, which is nice.
The sound is also kind of a letdown. I will have my volume at 6 (the highest is like 30) and the voice-overs still sound like my speakers are blowing out. The funny thing is I know that they are not because everything else sounds great. The sound is disappointing since, at least for me, half the point of playing a Max Payne game is the great voice-overs that tell Max's story through the gritty underworld that is New York City. With Max Payne 3 most likely cancelled or delayed, pass on the Ps2 version of the game and pick it up on the Xbox or the PC, because this is not the version that you want to spend your time waiting with.
Overall though, I can see how someone who can only play it on the Ps2 and has never played the game before enjoying this game. The story is great in every way that the first Max Payne was. Mona Sax is back, and things are becoming even more twisted for Max. The classic dream levels are back, but are in no way as fun as they were in the first game.
