Metal Gear Acid was supposed to by my light at the end of the tunnel. It was supposed to be the first action PSP game to completely blow me away. While Metal Gear Acid was neither of those things, it was still a lot better than I had expected it to be and is a fun twist on the series, for fans of the series.
Sadly no matter how great of a game this is, it is not a very friendly game to newcomers to the Metal Gear series. Sorry folks but I strongly recommend completing the PS2 installments before even touching this one. While the PS2 games told the long and twisting story through beautiful cinematics with great voice-overs, Metal Gear Acid tells its story through comic book style stills and text, lots and lots of text. This can cause the game to be a lot slower than it is in the console versions of the game.
If you didn't already know this, Metal Gear Acid takes the action into a card based strategy game. At first I was not sure if I would enjoy my Metal Gear with this new gameplay, I thought that it would slow down a series that already wasn't the fastest paced. I was wrong. The game feels almost as fast paced as that of the console versions, the fact that you can press the triangle button and the enemies turns move faster was nice. Even though at times I wished I could just go into first person mode and kill everyone around me, this game involves a lot of strategy that is absent in the Solid games.
One thing that any fan of the series wants to know is: Is the story as twisted as the games before it? The answer is yes. The bosses are souped up and the paranormal is everywhere. I do not want to go into much further detail of the story itself because I don't want to give anything away, but yes the story is just as good as the Solid games.
The graphics in this game are pretty good for an earlier PSP, but it doesn't look as good as some of the games that are out now. The comic book stills that are used in the cutscenes look sharp and are pretty good looking. The game has the Metal Gear feel to it, like something is wrong, but you just don't know what it is yet and that is what makes this game so much fun to play.
After all this praising of the game, I have to say that I only recommend this game to the series veterans out there. I can see the slow paced nature of the game, and the fact that there are no cutscenes, ruin the series for people who have never even given it a chance. Metal Gear Acid is one of the greatest action games on the PSP at this time, but lacks something that the console versions have that keep this game from getting a 10/10. Metal Gear Acid for the PSP, gets a 9/10 definitely play this game, even if it means waiting so you can play MGS2 and 3 before this one.
