My first experience with Liberty City Stories was earlier this year on the PS2. Well the game was pretty fun; I felt that it was lacking things that would make it be comparable to Vice City and San Andreas. I thought that maybe it was because it was a handheld game ported over to the PS2 that it was lacking the fun and excitement of the other games. So I picked up the PSP version hoping that the game would be better than the PS2 game. I was mistaken.
The game is the exact same as it was on the PS2 with multiplayer. The multiplayer is not that fun, and I don't know if the hotel I was staying in had a bad connection or what, but I could not find anyone playing the online game, even though I will admit some of the new multiplayer modes sound pretty cool.
The game stars Toni Cippriani (please excuse any misspellings) whom you might remember from GTA 3. Toni is back in Liberty City and Salvatore Leone has some jobs for him to do. The game takes place before GTA 3 and not that much changes in the layout of the city. Staunton Island looks a little bit different, but other than that, that is about it. One thing that I liked about this game though was that more of it took place on Shoreside Vale, which was really lacking from GTA 3.
You will do things in this game that are referenced to in GTA 3 and you will run into characters from all over the GTA universe.
The sound in this game is ok. The voice-overs are great, even though I do not get why they couldn't get the same celebrities to play the characters that they played in GTA3. The radio stations are terrible, just like they were in GTA 3. The one good radio station is like in GTA 3 the talk radio station.
The graphics in this game are I don't know how to describe them. They look pretty good for the PSP, but I don't know if they could pass off as a release title of the Ps2. The character models and draw distances are pretty good for it being a PSP game.
That being said, this game does not have the replay value that the console versions have. There are two reasons for this. The first one is that there is a good chance that you have already done everything that there is to do in Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto 3. A second reason is that the story is nothing special, where you would want to play through the story mode again. This is very disappointing since I have played through all the other GTA games more than twice.
