Sega's first Gamecube title is definitely and original one. I mean you don't see many monkeys rolling around in balls now do you?
Luckily know one had to go bananas waiting for this one because it was out at launch, and it was definitely one of the best in the awesome bunch. The graphics may not be extremely impressive but they don't need to be on this type of game.
For those of you that don't know much about monkey ball is about then this is for you. You choose from 4 different monkeys, Aai Aai, Mee Me, Baby and Gon Gon. The aim is to roll through a series of obstacles; collecting bananas on the way then make it to the goal at the end of the level. As simple as that!
There are 3-difficulty settings, beginners, advanced and expert you can also unlock master, which is really tough. The control system must be the simplest on any game; all you have to do is move the analogue stick in the way you want to roll. However it is very sensitive so you have to get used to that. Sometimes the camera can be a real pain, not helping much with the sensitive controls.
The weird thing about this game is that it's very frustrating but extremely addictive at the same time. Like when you get to a hard level and you keep falling off at the same point, you say to yourself just one more go. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to go out and get a new controller after playing Monkey Ball from smashing the controller down with frustration when you keep falling off into oblivion.
Apart from the normal mode you can do practice and competition mode which is when you choose 5 different courses and you have to race against a friend to finish the course first. Although 1 player is very important, multiplayer is where it shines. You can choose from 3 minigames at first then another 3 when you unlock them by gaining enough points on 1Player. The minigames are monkey target, race, fight, billiards, golf and bowling which are all tremendous fun.
There is no doubt this is one of the best multiplayer games out, if you don't believe me then get 3 mates round and play it! Many people want to know which game is better, this or Monkey Ball 2, so they know which one to buy. Well I say if you have the money buy both because they're both good in their own way. Monkey Ball 2 has more minigames and a story mode but the story mode is mostly based on luck not skill which is a shame.
