This game takes a simple storyline and creates a very entertaining, action-filled game with killer graphics
This game utilizes every ounce of graphical ability the SNES has and creates a very visually appealing, fun-filled adventure. Taking on the role of the classic Nintendo character, Donkey Kong, you begin on a quest with a very simple objective: Get your stash of giant bananas back. Tagging along is your sidekick monkey, Diddy, who is a new character to Nintendo. Both have different pros and cons including Donkey's ability to find banana bunches in the ground and Diddy's agility. The game plays out as groups of stages that are all on a group of maps. As you beat a stage, you will receive the next one in line similar to games like Super Mario World. Each stage is comprised of a sidescrolling area, full of monsters, vines, bananas, balloons, barrels, caves, and secrets.
The gameplay is great. The controls are simple and easy to learn. If you don't enjoy swing from vines and shooting from one barrel to another, then there's something wrong with you. It's unlike any game before. When you collect 100 bananas or find a balloon you receive an extra life, which you'll probably need as the game gets progressively more difficult. Some of the later stages will have you concentrating intently on every turn the stage takes. There are also two two-player modes. In one, player 1 plays as Donkey and player 2 plays as Diddy, both of which came be alternated between at any time. In the other, each player controls a separate party that moves at his or her own pace and the turns alternate between the two parties.
The graphics are revolutionary. Only a few games on the SNES exhibit this kind of possibly Playstation quality graphics. While there is no rotating of the screen, the game being sidescrolling, the three-dimensional quality is obvious in all the characters as well as the backgrounds. The game is just a pleasure to watch.
The sound is great. Plenty of unique sound effects per character and monster as well as a great soundtrack. The treetop theme, factory theme, and final battle theme are especially amazing arrangements. I would even play this game just to hear the music.
The replay value is great. I've played this game all the way through multiple times in both single and multiplayer modes and it never gets old. In fact, I would have no objections to just going and playing the game right now. It's just a classic gaming masterpiece.
