For me, Secret of Mana is undeniably the greatest multiplayer RPG of all time for any system. I grew getting sucked away into this world with my two brothers at my side. Released in 1993 (over ten years ago!), this game still has a lot of the qualities that RPGs today lack.
The gameplay is memorable. All battles are in real-time allowing for more freedom when fighting, especially in a multiplayer game. The game pauses whenever anybody wants to use a magic or item, which is helpful often and is easy to get used to, even though it happens often. The ring commang style used when sorting through items are easy to use to. Also, there are eight different weapons that are eventually picked up that can be used by any of the three players. This allows for customization of your character to be good at wielding the weapon of your choice.
The music is one of the most memorable parts of the game, with one of the best soundtracks of any game from the era. Hiroki Kikuta was a pure genius in composing at the time. There are very memorable songs like Salamando's theme and the Dark Lich battle music. Don't be fooled by this game's release date. It IS possible for old games to have outstanding music.
This game is easy to learn to use, the graphics are good, and the storyline is great, as Squaresoft's storylines have a tradition of being. The reply value is extremely high. I played this game over 500 hours between the age of five and twelve. If your an RPG fan, you couldn't possibly pass this game up. If you don't have a Super Nintendo, it would be worth buying one. This is one video gaming masterpiece.
