This was the third Final Fantasy game released in the United States but in Japan it was actually called Final Fantasy 6.  The story begins with a girl being enslaved to help the empire but quickly becomes a very complex and involving storyline.  Every Final Fantasy game seems to have some kind of quirk and with this one it is powerful magic beings used for their magical properties called espers.  There are 20 or so characters you will use on your quest and each one has a unique personality and abilities.  My favorite was Edgar and his tools ability.  There is nothing better than dicing up monsters with the chainsaw.

Graphics: 5.5
The opening sequence shows three people in mechs walking through the snow.  The first time I played this game back in 1994 I thought the graphics were unbelievable.  Of course things are different today but the game definitely sports good graphics in the wide spectrum of 16 bit video games.  It is games like Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG that prevent me from giving it a higher rating.

Playability: 7
When trying to rate the playability of RPG's, I typically look for the quality of storyline and the replay value.  I personally think this might have the best storyline of any RPG.  If I began to get sick of the rather monotonous battle system, I would keep playing anyways because I always had to see what would happen next to Doma Castle, the Opera, and that crazy squid boss.  The game doesn't have a whole lot of replay value once you've gotten every character and esper but I've played through the game several times just because I enjoyed it so much.  The battle system isn't bad except the game has received a lot of criticism because every character can use magic and will essentially learn all the same spells.

Fun Factor: 8.5
It is really difficult to compare RPG's to games of other genres but I'll do my best.  Final Fantasy is a great game and should give you 35-50 hours of solid gameplay.  Kefka is probably one of the coolest badguys in videogame history and I think Lokke is one of the coolest characters I've seen in a game too.  I still have nightmares at night about going to the town of Zozo….what a creepy town.
