Man, I know this will be unpopular.
I didn't have fun playing this game.
Okay, now that I've got that out, let me tell you why.
First of all, as has been mentioned before, this game is beautiful. A visual work of art. I don't think I've seen any game as gorgeous or stunning as this one.
Second, the slowing down of time, both automatic (during initial moves) and user-controlled, is one of the most succesfully created innovative game ideas. It was great to watch the prince fly around enemies in slow motion, performing the moves I had just entered.
But the game itself I found entirely too frustrating. Call me weak, but I play games to have a good time, not to perform some self-tortuous exercise in minutia. The executing of precise, difficult, long streams of commands with death as your result of failure started to get to me within a few hours, especially with no open saving. I didn't walk on the wall to the right for 1/2 second instead of 3/8 of a second after climbing up the totem pole and walking across the ropes, oh well... start the entire scene over? Come on.
Also, where's the fun in fighting for one minute and running for ten? I was looking forward to each battle scene with such fervor that I prolonged the battles just to avoid that let down when it was finished. I know that it wasn't designed to be just hack 'n slash, but again, come on.
I really liked the way this game looked, the intricate story and themes, and the beautifully executed use of time, but the more I played it, the madder I got at what it could have been. It seemed to me that the game designers were taking pleasure in allowing only the most determined gamers to enjoy this title, and I thought it was a great shame. Despite the hype, I would seriously recommend renting this title first; I did, and it saved me forty bucks.
