I really fell in love with the first acecombat, so I couldn't wait for acecombat 5 to come out.  The day it hit the shelfs it was mine.
I had one peeve about this game before I even bought it though, and that was that it didn't have a multiplayer mode.  That dissapointed me.
I went right into campain mode, which started with a movie.  WOW!  The graphics of the movie were UNBELIEVABLE!
I couldn't belief it, and was fighting the urge to just skip it and get with the playing.
The playing controls are very familure if you have played acecombat 4.  The only change was that instead of the d-pad being alomost useless unless you want to change your view or use auto-pilot, you use it to control your 3-4 wingmen.  The only downside (small one) was that the button to switch your jet view was the R3 button.  Now sadly you cannot view your jet during flight.
The gameplay immediatly pulled you in.  Although some graphics may not look as cool as screen shots may have shown, they are still an improvement and have quite a lot of detail put into the terrain.  One of my favorite parts is hitting mach 1.  When you hit this speed your jet has a white cloud suddenly form from it, just like real.  I found that very neat.  Missile paths were very neat and looked much cooler thean the ones from acecombat 4.
I also find it cool that you would pick what aircraft your wingmen would fly and you could buy a more than 1, 2,or 3 of the same kind of plane.  This was neat because I could put together a small fleet of different jets or put one together that includes all of the same jet.
The story was very interesting, but I think that I was more into the Acecombat 4 storyline.  I wont spoil it for anyone that hasn't played yet though.
The selection of planes is nice, and it was cool that there were planes that you couldn't get on acecombat 4.  The New selection of migs and SUs is cool.
I was a tad bit dissapointed with arcade mode.  I didn't make me happy that I only had the choice of a F-22.  The play was fun though, although there wasn't very much effort in trying to continue the story from acecombat 4, which they kinda try to do.
Replays were different than ace 4 and werent as interesting.  You only had 4 views and 1 of them were of your wingmen.
All in all, if you are a fan of the acecombat series, like airplane games, or simply are obssesed with jets (Im all three) this is a good game for you.  Otherwise it's still a good game, but you kinda somehow have to be in to it to really like it.
