Wipeout Pure, as far as I know, is another portion of the Wipeout series. I am assuming this because I have never played a Wipeout besides this one. As far as I can tell, this game is set in the future where Nascar has been replaced by people in very fast space ships, only now, weapons are allowed and encouraged. Again, I am assuming, only because the only hint of a storyline in this game is in the instruction booklet. Now for the stuff I can actually tell you.
This game is very fast. When you first pick up the game and play, the races are fairly easy and slow paced. But as you progress through the game and unlock more leagues, the races will get much, much faster; the final leagues average speed being around 1000kmh. I must point out though that as you progress through the different leagues, the courses do not change. Only the speed of the cars and the number of laps will differ. One disappointment I felt about Wipeout Pure is that you cannot unlock new ships. You can unlock 8 tracks, but you basically must unlock half these tracks before you can progress to the next league. There are a couple of classic tracks to unlock, but they are put in for you to figure out to unlock them yourself.
There are 8 ships to choose from, each having unique handling, speed, thrust and shield. The weapons, which you can only have one at a time, vary from homing missiles to turbo. These weapons can be used to fire at your opponents or absorbed to increase your health. Your health can be reduced by running off of the track, slamming into a wall, or being hit with a weapon.
The single player modes of Wipeout Pure include Tournament, Single Race, Time Attack, Free Play, and Zone. Single Race is exactly what it sounds like; race a single time against other ships. In time attack, you see how fast you can complete a race, but you are the only person racing the track. There are no weapon pads, but at the beginning of each lap you are given a Turbo power up. Free play is the same as time attack only you can race for as long as you like. The tournament mode is like, well, Nascar. You play through the tournament, and at the end the person the person with the most points wins. This is also how you unlock new leagues and such. In Zone mode, you race on a very futuristic track in a very futuristic ship by your self. The only catch is that you cannot stop. If you mash your air brakes, nothing happens. You can use them to turn, but that's all. The only way to 'win' is by blowing up your ship. If you traveled far enough before blowing up you will be rewarded.
You can also use Ad-Hoc to face your friends who have Wipeout Pure.
One neat feature of this game is what happens when you get a gold medal. For every gold medal you receive, you unlock a piece of gallery art, ranging from concept ships to tracks. This has nothing to do with the main part of the game, really, but its neat nonetheless.
In the end, this is still an enjoyable game. You should enjoy this game if you are a fan of Mario Kart or fast paced racers. So here is my final verdict for Wipeout Pure:
