:Introduction:
Contra: Shattered Soldier is a very welcome return to true Contra form for the series. Anyone looking to be hardcore should look into this game. If you like to see stuff blow up every half second, this is your game.
:Difficulty:
I must say that complaints about this game's challenge level seem rather unfair. This is not nearly the hardest game I've played and not even the hardest Contra game. The game may appear to be unfairly challenging at first to more casual gamers, but there is a practice mode which allows you to sharpen your skills.
:Game Mechanics:
While I would say this game basically plays like the old 2D Contras, there is one somewhat major difference: You have all your weapons at all times. The game gives you six weapons, three main weapons and their charged attacks, which are all useful in their own way except perhaps the charged up machine gun attack. The game also has two useful functions: one that locks your aim so you can strafe, and one that locks your movement so you can snipe.
:Sound & Graphics:
While the music in this game isn't the kind I prefer in general, it does fit the action and do its job of keeping you pumped. The graphics are very nice, too. All the gory details of the aliens are well expressed.
:Story:
Well, story's never mattered much in Contra, but this is probably the most complex plot I've seen in Contra.
:Conclusion:
This game is short in theory, but the challenge makes sure that you take a while to actually beat it. At times, the game can be a boss-fest, but it's a damn good one. Contra isn't really meant to be a multidimensional game. This game knows what it wants to be and does that very well, which is why I can't complain about it in the least.
