Final Fantasy XI will make you think twice about unnessisary hate towards MMORPGs.
When I was first interested in getting this game, I had jsut had a tragic breakup with the Everquest franchise. As a 5 year EQ junkie, I had been conned into believing that all MMORPGs were created equal. Settling for uninspired quests, sub-par graphics, and whiny brats was the way it had to be.
Then, Square-Enix released FF XI. My god, the light shined bright. Not only have they taken a great franchise and added great elements, they improved on the presentation of the MMORPG structure. A game in this genre can be pretty AND functional.
The game play is smooth and the storyline, while there is not much, is better than nothing. I have only three real complaints.
1. Forced to party: Sometimes you don't want to party, and want to make it on your own. If you were able to solo, aside from Beast Tamer, it would improve the game.
2. Grinding: Past a certain level, the game gets hard to stay interested in. Like the other MMORPGs, there has been no way around it.
3. Rare Items: Since the Economy is player-run, and money is so important, getting items you need or benifit your class can be hard since there is massive camping and price gouging. SWG had the same problem.
If you have never played a MMORPG, this one is a recommended start. If you see it on the self and expect a FF title like on the consoles, don't fret. Once you get used to the gameplay, you are sure to love it. Can't wait for Chains of Promethia.
