This remarkable piece by Peter Molyneux is a game which covers the life of a hero. Shall the hero follow the path of an angelic savior or a demonic ruler is in the hands of the player themselves.
The game has gathered disrespect since so much was taken out of Peter Molyneux's core idea. He promised the world to the gaming public, however did not follow through with his promises, and made the public whom had anticipated his game, regard it with contempt. However, to try and view the game from a different perspective, I scrapped myself of all anticipation and began the game as someone whom was not even remotely interested in it. From there, I discovered that Fable was actually a deep game, which if played into with very high expectations will disappoint, but will overwhelm if you go into the game with a moderate expectancy of the game's performance.
Graphically the game was not as magnificent as earlier shots had shown. However, they were on par and the lighting was very nice, especially in the forests. I had no trouble with the camera, and was never walking into walls and could easily center the camera onto my hero.
The sound of the game is just like that out of a storybook, and although some of the character's voices can be a little annoying and repetitive, the sound that the game puts out is fulfilling.
Controlling the game is not hard at all. Any player can step right into the game with no knowledge of the controls and fight through a battle with little to no difficulty. Difficulty is my next point. The game may seem too easy for fans of the RPG genre. Health is conveniently placed outside of battles, and you'll find yourself with loads of items that will rejuvenate your health and willpower walking into one.
Next comes the most important part of a RPG – the story. This game featured a story that although was hyped out to be a spectacular legend, could be sniffed out from a mile away. The story held no true surprises, and this was a great disappointment to me.
As the final portion of this review, we'll cover the length of the game and its replay value. The game can take easily 7 hours if you don't go through any side quests or are an avid RPG player. If you look deep enough though, you can squeeze about 12 hours out of the game, and after playing through it about four times, that is the maximum I could achieve without leaving the game running all night. The game may seem as though it won't be worth it since it is short by RPG standards, but the replay value does make up for some of the length of the game. Before you are entirely sick of the game and want to throw down the controller in disgust, you can play through Molyneux's game at least twice, to get both the good and evil sides of the character development and gameplay covered.
Fable is an excellent game that although was hyped out to become a masterpiece, is truly just a moderate RPG with enormous potential. If Big Blue Box ever wants to have a go at a sequel to this game, then Xbox fans may be able to satisfy their need for another great RPG – if this game listens to the gaming community and tries to improve upon their game, a sequel could be tremendous.
