I am sure that many of you have heard that Far Cry is the best first person shooter game since Half Life. I think that is very wrong, because personally, I liked it more than Half Life. So, it is the best FPS since... what? Sure, Half Life did have several amazing innovative stuff back then in '98--however, Far Cry is the only game to actually make you feel like you are on some island paradise, away from countless corridor indoor FPS games like Doom, Half Life, etc...
My dream is to go on a honeymoon on one of the tropical islands. Far Cry did indeed satisfy that dream for the time being, given that I am of a pioneering and adventurous type. That experience will never be forgotten.
It played beautifully on my 3+ GHz computer with 9800 Pro at 1024x764 with 4X AA and 16X AF. It is highly recommended to play it with antialiasing turned on, and with the geometry shaders on so that trees of the maximum distance are drawn on screen instead of turning into ugly 2-D sprites. Playing it at 1600x1200 will definitely reward you with the ultimate paradise experience... a luxury that only the rich can afford for now.
The only drawbacks of the game are: similar-looking enemies. There is not enough variety among these soldiers.. their faces all look the same. The same goes for monsters. At first, these monsters look strikingly interesting and well,.. ugly in a funny way. The way the flashlight lit up corpses did not look right--it made the corpses glow more than it should. The monsters obviously have stupid A.I., which can be easily forgiven by understanding that monsters are usually endowed with pea-sized brains. The AI of the soldiers is impressive, nonetheless.
Graphically-wise, it makes me lust too hard over the beauty of the islands. Usually, when I am thirsty, and I see the blue water.. it makes me want to reach out and drink it!!! Yup, the graphics are that great!
Realistically, the weapons are not like some futuristic uber-style plasma guns. They're like the real-world guns of today, like Counter Strike. It also plays realistically, like Counter-Strike, but much better because of all that coverage you can get from the "flora and fauna" (vegetation, plants, trees, etc..).
For those who like fast-paced games, it can be tedious when having to walk quite some distance on the amazingly enormous levels. These levels are by far the biggest levels of any FPS game ever made. Even driving across these levels can feel like a fun, long race. The first boating experience will undoubtedly put a smile on your face---I cannot explain how, but I am sure it will.
It will definitely be a challenge for Valve to ensure that Half Life 2 is a more rewarding experience than Far Cry (I think it could secretly be the reason for the delay...). Thank you Crytek, for bringing out a FPS game with the ability to drive vehicles before Half Life 2 ever came out. It was a new gaming experience, like the more un-realistic vehicle experience of UT2004 Onslaught released at roughly the same time.
All-in-all, it's a truly wonderful tropical adventure! This 20+ hour game is Far Recommended!!!
