I love the simplicity of Doom 3. For those who complain about the simplicity of Doom 3 compared to other current shooters, hey.. let's look back to Doom 1 and 2. Sure, Doom 3 does not have the "lean left and lean right" features/controls, but heck, you can jump, crouch, reload, and use a flashlight. We used to love Doom 2, and all we could do in addition to shooting was run instead of walk. In fact, Doom 3 is still more complicated than Quake 3. In Quake 3, there was the same zoom function, but no flashlight or reload feature. Teleport in Q3 sucked anyway.
For me, Doom 3 is complicated enough, and at the same time, simple enough. I wouldn't mind the lean left/right features, but the programmers would have to make the game harder if we could lean around corners. Also, it'd just add more keys/controls to use on the already-cramped keyboard.
One feature I'd like to see in Doom 3 though, is the ability to use the flashlight with the pistol. The pistol is the only one-handed weapon in the game, so why the heck cannot we use a flashlight along with the pistol, just like police, FBI, and SWAT team guys do today? The pistol already sucks in the game anyways, so it'd still be scary to have to empty your pistol clip into one of those zombies, and then put away the flashlight in order to reload as quickly as possible! Whoa man, that's much more realistic, and perhaps even more scary than not being able to use the flashlight with the pistol at all.
Get it, guys? Emptying a pistol into one of the few zombies in the dark, then suddenly reloading while it's temporarily pitch black! Ooooooooooooooooooh!!!!! Chills up your spine! ID software guys, it'd be *bright* of you to release a patch that adds this feature.
I personally loved the game. In spite of that, the feature that bothered me the most was the constantly spawning imps. Too many Imps spawned throught the game, and I would like to see some more pinkys in the game--since there are way too few pinkys. Pinkys are enormous monsters, and really cool. Maybe one of the reasons why the variety of monsters were limited in each level is primarily because of memory usage (more variety, more precaching or memory loading). For example, there would be spider demons coming at you, one after another, repeatedly until you got so bored with it. Instead, there should have been more of them coming at you *at once*, not repeatedly in lines.
I'll share a feature that I personally loved about the game--it's the weapon bob. The way the weapon moves when you walk is exactly the same as that of Doom 1 and 2, it seems. I've noticed that this feature--more than any other feature--gives a "Doom" feeling to the game. The walk/run bob isn't like the original Doom (in Doom 3, your view does not bob as much up and down, and it bobs in a different way like as if bobbing right at each footstep instead of smoothly up and down). It's like the "lazy weapon" feature in Far Cry.
Let's hope that ID Software releases a patch that adds the flashlight-n-pistol feature (along with the "put-away-flashlight-while-reloadin
g" feature), AND replaces some of those spawning Imps with non-spawning Pinkys.
Along with adding a Co-op mode, that'd instantly make Doom 3 one of the greatest Classics. In addition, a patch should enable Imps and others to throw fireballs faster (making the game harder especially if a lean left/right feature is added), and enable Plasma and Rocket projectiles to radiate light as they travel. The future patches should allow more settings to be changed in the game menu instead of having to tweak them in .cfg and .pk4 files (like enabling player self-shadow, etc..). Finally, like in Far Cry, we should be allowed to choose how long deceased enemies stay on the ground before vaporizing. It sounds like a lot of work for ID, but look at how many patches they released for Quake3.
One last thing I would like is for ID to release a downloadable high-resolution texture pack that replaces some of the stretched-out low resolution textures in the game. While most textures look great, some are embarrassingly low-resolution or stretched out that it takes away from the pure gaming immersion in the Doom3 environment.
That's pretty much all I have to say about Doom 3 without including any spoilers about the bosses or endings. For now, it is recommended to play and enjoy only a couple of levels at a time, rather than try to play the game half-way in a single day. Trust me, you'll enjoy the game a lot more that way and forget about the repetitive aspects of the game like those damn spawning Imps.
Advice: To make the game brighter, increase the gamma from 1 to 1.2 in the DoomConfig.cfg file, instead of increasing the brightness. Increasing the brightness just makes the black more grey and the light too bright. Gamma makes the in-between more lighted-up.
P.S.-- I'm sure ID software has an enormous potential in making money off of releasing an "Add-on" (adding some more monsters and levels and maybe a double-barrel shotgun, along with a co-op feature if it hasn't already been enabled yet). A welcome addition would be higher-polygon monsters. I wouldn't mind spending 20 more bucks for more of great Dooming experience!
