Viewtiful Joe is an original MODERN retro game - if you get what I mean.  So, what I mean is it's a modern game based on retro styling.  To be even simpler it's an updated 2D scrolling beat'em'up with Cel-Shaded graphics.  Yes.  I could've just left it with that.

You play as Joe who is a fantical "Captain Blue" fan and a cool super hero on the side.  It starts off with Joe and his girlfriend sitting in an (empty) cinema watching Blue's latest movie - a Star Wars-esque style opening (story scrolling into distance) before his girlfriend gets dragged into the screen!

Soon, Joe is pulled in and starts fighting these weird dudes in costumes and collecting stuff, without any out of the ordinary powers.  The story is your same old rescue your girlfriend from the evil people of Movie Town, but hey, the bosses are cool.

Soon enough, Captain Blue comes and challenges you before giving you something - you can now become VIEWTIFUL JOE!  Some cool powers await you as you progress (within the first three levels you get the BASIC LEVEL versions...)

At the midway point to each level is a break where you can buy stuff and save the game - you can also purchase upgrades for your moves like Mach Speed and the such.  Speaking of the powers, Mach Speed speeds things up so you can get quick (very) combos in and deal MAJOR damage, although it isn't particularly useful.

Slo-Mo slows things down so Joe can get more bang for his buck and blow enemies into the sky before jumping up and kicking them to kingdom come.  Zoom is a VERY neat power where you can zoom in on Joe and make him do even COOLER moves!  If you are dropping you can do a dive kick which smacks into your enemies - or why not jumping uppercut them? It's your choice as you take on this brilliant, original 2D Scrolling Beat'em'up.

Now available for PlayStation2 as well as the Nintendo GameCube.
