I wasn't that impress with Ys. There are some good points and bad ones, but has you progress even more into the game, the flaws are a real nag. Graphics are what you should expect from a 2d game, they can be very good and sometimes ordinary. But I must say it's still a good graphical game. The control is really tight, and for this kind of game, it's capital. The combat are straight foward, with 3-4 moves and a somewhat limited but efficient list of special powers. Very similar to Legend of Mana in terms of gameplay/RPG style action. However, has you progress you have to guess a lot of what is going on. There is very little sens of direction, and what the characters are saying are sometimes not helping at all. The fact that you have to level your way to beat superior boss and common ennemies, would have been acceptable, if it didn't always rely on a game of trial and errors. The flagrant lack of save spots in keys areas (Before the bosses) is also extremely annoying. There is a huge amount of backtracking...and I mean HUGE. I don't mind some of it, but when the game strictly rely on it, it's just a boring experience. The story seems good, the voiceover are exceptionnally good in terms of quality, and they are over each texts. Conclusion: It is sad really to see that Ys, is so near greatness but fall short in terms of it's construction and conception. Yet all the elements are there to make it a great 2d game, in the style of those old action RPGs. But it is too badly focused and put together to make it a keeper. Maybe for those who love having their gameplay manual beside them, with a large amount of patience. Graphics: 7 , sounds: 9 , gameplay: 5 , overall: 6
