Killer 7 might not be for everyone. You have to love oddities and a dark twisted story. The graphics were a mix bag. They are very stylized celshading, and if some levels are too bland and feel flat, some other have a real sense of depth in them. The characters are well done, and I like the shadows in general. The sounds are the greatest aspect of this game. Some voice over are made through a voice synthesizer, with a very interesting result. The music is also quite good and entertaining. The gameplay is also a mix bag.
The controls are not very standard for this kind of game. Killer 7 is a third person for
exploration, and first person for combat. And the controls are made so you walk/run
through predetermine paths. It does work and you get use to it, but you don't get any sense of liberty or real exploration. The puzzles are fair and always feasible, and the way they are done is a perfect fit for this game. The saving system is not very good in my view, because a bit too far apart, and the saving area is not always well protected from some monsters attacks. So, if all your characters are low in health (Including Garcia) and you have to get out revive a Smith, it's not very interesting to have no times to react against some monsters just after you open the save door. Also, the game has some real issues with the Start buttons. Many times it didn't react in time or worked after loading, and my controller (Sony) is working perfectly with other games. The combat can be innerving at times because of the scanning. Since most of the time you have to target manually, having to scan the target felt like a waste of time. In that regards, the auto targeting is a lost feature that doesn't serve any real purpose. The loading times on the PS2 were absolutely bad. You get them everywhere and everytimes you pass any doors, and there is many of them...just atrocious. Yet, Killer 7 is a very good game, because of the way everything is presented, with some touches of paranoia, craziness and schizophrenia. If you love unrealistic games, I guess you will like Killer 7. The combats are dynamic, the story is crazy and with a style of it's own.
