After Doom 1 and Doom 2 it was almost a sure thing that Doom 3 would deliver the most intense and exciting gaming seen in a long time.  And though Doom 3 tried...  it just fell short.

After playing through Doom 3 I realized that the game grew almost tedious as it went on.  The movement of the creatures were predictable.  Even where they would come from was predictable.  It became almost annoying how the creatures acted as well, they would not dodge attacks, or react to being shot other than making a sound.  If they were a ranged attacker they would litterally stand still and just hurl fireballs at you.  This may have been fine in Doom 1 or Doom 2, but these days gamers expect more.

The multiplayer was something of a laugh.  When making a game, it should not be up to the modding community to finish it for you.  It should be up to them to modify a finished product.  First off, the maximum number of players is 4.  Thats right...  4 players.  Back to the good ol' days of Nintindo 64.  Even with only 4 players and maps the size of a small house...  I still noticed lag issues.  The doom 3 multiplayer would have been great if it had been released in 1995, but once again...  these days gamers expect more.

Finally we come to the graphics.  Notice how I put this last.  This is where the graphics should be ranked in a game.  Not first.  Making the game look pretty should fall behind how much fun it is to play.  This is where Doom 3 has its biggest fault.  They spent way too much effort on making the game look nice.  I must admit, they did a great job making it look nice too.  I only wish they had spent as much time or effort on the rest of the game.  If they had, Doom 3 would indeed be the instant classic that it should be.

Overall the game recieved 2 out of five stars.  1 Star for graphics, and the other star for a storyline (Though it was a little on the weaker side) I feel that is a very generous rating as well.  Doom 3 does not have potential to be an instant classic as a stand alone game.  The graphics are its only strong point, and in a few years most other games will have them beat in that area too.
