Sonic Heroes could be considered the third game in the Sonic Adventure series. As such, it has quite a reputation to stand up to, especially when compared to the outstanding Sonic Adventure 2. However, it seems to fall just a bit short of the mark.
The overall premise of the game is similar to the Sonic Adventure games - run through a large 3-D level, possibly complete a task or two, and find the exit. The new addition in Sonic Heroes is the three-character team system. While it may seem a bit awkward at first, it won't take long for the controls to feel quite natural. It almost seems as if your team operates just as one character, and switching characters simply allows you to use a few more abilities. This aspect of the game was very well-done.
One major shortfall of the game, however, is the amount of repetition that must be endured to finish it. Each level must be completed four times (once with each team) to be able to reach the true end of the game. The problem with this is that three of those four times are simply playing the same level on three different difficulty settings. The fourth time, with Team Chaotix, there will be some sort of goal to achieve (usually collecting items) before finishing the level. While this is a nice addition, it still doesn't seem like much more than simply running through the level.
The multiplayer mode on the game is another issue with this game. The gameplay itself is fine, but the framerate on multiplayer is rather choppy, especially in the Special Stage games. This makes it somewhat hard to keep up with the action onscreen.
Overall, the game isn't too bad. If you're a fan of the Sonic series, it's definitely worth a purchase. Others may still find the game to be just fine, just not their best gaming experience ever. Overall, I give the game a 7/10.
