Wow, this game is amazing in every aspect of its being. You can see that there was some real work and polish done on this game. I'd give it 5 out of 5 without saying a word, but there is no fun in that is there? So on with the review.
First, concept: this is a racing game so you're going to be racing. The twist is the fact that this game rewards you for driving recklessly. You get boosts for slamming your opponents off the road, and driving into oncoming traffic. Very original.
Next, game play. The meat of any game. this one excels the control of all the 70 some cars is amazing, and the use of the controls is seamless, when you crash, you can press and hold the r1 button (for the PS2) and start "Impact time" in which the world slows down for you to watch the glorious crashes. Which would be enough for me, but then they added a system called "aftertouch" in which you can direct your wreck into other cars. Very nice indeed. The game also looks very cinematic. A good example is when you force your opponents off the road, the camera goes into impact time and lets you see how you took out your opponent and shows them flying. An example of this is pushing them into a bus. It is hard to describe the giddy felling of watching your opponent careen into a bus as you skid away
Graphics: every thing in this game looks amazing, when you crash bits of every little thing explode from your car, the levels are very nicely render, and same with the cars. When crashing into opponents cars satisfying sparks fly. A nice feature that adds to the look of the game is blurring as you speed up. When reaching speeds of 100+ the edges of the screen blur giving a great sense of speed.
Sound: It is very nicely done. Many rock tracks will accompany you through this game. The sounds of the cars engines and wheels screeching are well done too. But the best, by far, is when you crash or someone else does. The crunching of metal is so nice; you just have to grin as it happens. In the "crash" mode of the game, after ramming into a busy intersection you will also be treated to the sound of car horns and alarms going off, adding to realism. The best effect that comes to mind however would be when you use impact time. Every sound is slowed down, as it should be, but also there is like a slow-mo track going on that adds to the intensity, much like watching a crash in a movie.
Overall: this game is a must have for anyone who has ever thought, "What would happen if I just did not stop?" and it is just a must have for anyone worth their game. The online mode is very cool too, but you will have to be in the broadband band wagon for this game. Everything in this game is superb, fun to play, so much to unlock, and that giddy indescribable joy of watching your car crash into a crowded street and the cars build a nice pile up. Just get it, now.
