I never really liked the other GTA games, I know this is quite surprising, however the missions got difficult early on. I didn't feel I wanted to really progress in the game as it was fairly obvious what was coming next.
With this last installment you NEED to know what happens next, the storyline is superb with twists throughout. Starting off in a tiny close, backed up by only a handful of close allies (and some soon to be enemies) - before venturing into the wilderness with your girlfriend in toe. As an example of how good this game compell's you, one minute your thrust out of your home area - the next minute recruiting a small team of experts to build up your garage. The gameplay is as good as ever and the graphics are very good without being sublime. But it's the whole world which is GTA's strong point.
Interesting locations you'll want to investigate (Huge mountains!), Unique items (Parachute?), and new motors (Lowriders!) - or how about you take your lowrider, race it off that huge mountain and base jump from the vehicle? do it, DO IT.
There is so much freedom to do as you choose, okay that may not be completly true due to the Police blasting you down when you try to entere San Andreas' version of Las Vegas. Though this I believe is to stop the gamer getting ahead of themselves.
Mini games - thousands of mini games dot the map, Pool, Basketball, Gambling, Taking over turf - it goes on and on. This is the second most impressive asset after its location and these more than detract from the odd difficult mission or minor bug in the targetting system. Again some missions here are frustrating (that blasted Air Raid mission), but if you get annoyed go out to the countryside and try some Trucker missions or even worse those really awful valet missions.
This creation has really grabbed me more than anything before although I am now starting to tire of certain aspects. The main contender is the radar in the bottom left - it's simply far too small, and when you need to get to a desired location within a time limit it's difficult to know exactly where to go.
Starting gang wars is'nt the easiest thing to do either (although it should be in the scheme of things), as theirs constantly a patrol car or two driving around. Just how many police are their in San Andreas - probably five times the amount that work in England! Roads are another one you need to pre-plan travelling long distances as one wrong turn and it's a long way back. That useless freeway constantly gets in the way (does anyone actually use these in America!!) Countrysides great their is just far to much. Though with all of these negative aspects there only on GTA as it's the only PS2 game to cover virtually every genre including god sim, arcade driver, platform, sneak em up, gambling, fighting, burgling - yes burgling a house! awful isn't it!
