Oh Fable, you could have been such a wonderfull game. What happened? Simply, it's too short and many of the hyped features are not present or simply don't play a major role.
Before I say anything, let me say that Fable is not a bad game. During the 13 hours it lasted I was the happiest man on the face of the earth. The gorgeous graphics and the immersive sound combined with the addictive gameplay made for a great combination. Combat consists of attacking, blocking, and using magic. All of this is easy to use and actually fun. You gain experience by picking up orbs and allocating points from these into one of three categories, strength, skill, or will. This leads to my first big complaint. You really never specialize in one area. The game creators said that if you used magic lots, you would advance in magic, and if you used swords lots, you would get better at fighting. This is true to a point, but 90% of the experience points you get are general experience points that you can allocate any way you want. That, combined with the fact that using a bow is mostly useless and higher levels use up way too much experience, and you will probably level up all three skills equally. The gameplay is open, but it's really not that great. Sure you can purchase names for yourself and you can get scars, but that's all superficial and makes no change on the game. That being said, I did really feel connected to my character by the end as I molded him how I chosed.
So, I was playing the game, and then something unexpected happened. It ended. Yup, about 13 hours in the game ended. I was shocked. They spent countless years creating a game that could be beaten in.. 13 hours?? That's crazy. Sure, you could replay it. I even tried that, but quit halfway through. It's just not worth it. That being said, it was the best 13 hours of my life. This is THE BEST rental game ever.
