Fable is not a bad game, but its not a great game either. Its simply...average. Is it worth playing? Sure. Worth a purchase? Not to me, but everyone has differenet tastes. The game just smacks of influences from other games of eras past that weren't as polished but were more fun to play. The entire time I played Fable I was constantly reminded of older games like Baldur's Gate and the original Legacy of Kain
If you consider the length of Fable's development cycle plus what was promised, we had every reason to expect a genre-defining experience. Or at the very least something special. Instead we get a very ordinary quasi-RPG with some nice bells and whistles that ultimately falls very short in gameplay and leaves you wanting more. Or at least wanting what the game was supposed to be.
After beating this game in a horribly short amount of time (roughly 9 hours) I was at least hoping to go back and run around trying to unlock the various doors that pepper the land. Alas, I hit a button to skip the end credits and discovered that since I did that, I could not continue my game from the point I beat it. I was forced with the choice to replay a monotonous (and easy) final battle or trade the game in and vow to never trust Peter Molyneaux again. I chose the latter. The game simply wasn't interesting enough to warrant a replay, or to even try to unlock all its "secrets".
If you like quasi-RPG, dungeon hack type games then I would recommend both Baldur's Gate games available on the XBox. If you want a deep, true RPG that allows you to continue playing after you finish the main quest, then the Game of the Year Edition of Morrowind is a great play. Fable, in my opinion, falls way short of these games. Again, its not bad...its just all been done before, only not as pretty. Overall I give it a 7/10.
