Super Mario 64 was quite possibly the greatest video game in terms of head-turning graphics upon its release in 1996. No game changed the video game standard like this game.
Like all Mario games, Mario was save Princess Peach from the evil clutches of the King Bowser who has kidnapped her inside her castle. You play as the brave hero Mario. You must enter each world through paintings that have magically come alive that allow you to transport to different levels, such as a ghost house, a rainbow, a water-logged level, as well as many more. In order to open the doors that are locked, you must use star energy, and you must collect stars throughout the game. There are 120 stars throughout the whole game, but you don't need them all to complete the game. However if you want to see the big secret in the game, you will need them all.
The graphics and presentation in this game are phenomenal. This game set the standard for which all games due out the next few years would look at. Slight choppiness when looked back at it now (2004), but huge overworlds with 3D effects. Brilliant to say the least.
The sound and music is typical Mario flavor, upbeat and always fun.
Even though this game was released over 8 years ago, it's still a fun adventure to play and to me is better than Mario Sunshine, the GameCube copycat of Mario 64. If you own this, pop it in and feel the warm nostalgia. If you don't, try to find it cheap at a used video game store. 10/10
