The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the most respected gaming series ever. And without a doubt it deserves it. The game always has a nice flow to it. You can feel like you are actually in the game, watching it from different cameras positioned throughout all of the rooms in the game, like a VH1 celebrity reality show. There are many things the game does very good, almost good enough to be called perfection, which for me is very hard to reach. The animations are very very good. There is a lot of life-like movement. From the strip of cloth tied around Snake's head, to the frog that's hiding in the bushes. There are a few new features to this game that were not in MGS2. Such as "Hunting". That's right, snake will now crawl on his belly foraging for crunchies and munchies while he tries to save the world from it's ultimate destruction. Hey, a guy's gotta eat right? You can find all sorts of different plants and animals to eat. Crocodile, snakes, frogs, birds, fruits, and Calorie Mate! Yum Yum. It's Calorie Mate, fattening up asian sweatshop workers since 1907. The hunting isn't a very in depth part of the game though, it's not the main point either, so it doesn't have to be. Food will effect Snake in many different ways. It can make him sick, It can make his stamina fill all the way, it can make his stamina fill partially, it can...Well actually, that's about all it does, but it can rot if you keep it to long. You can also get Camoflauge. You can find this in various places throughout the game, and from defeating bosses in certain ways. Camoflauge will determine how easily noticed you are by the Soviets. Different Camoflauge works differently in different situations. Not only the camoflauge you're wearing determines how well you are hidden, but wether you are crouched, leaned against something, lying down, or in the shadows also changes how well you are hidden. In this installment, you will also have to cure your wounds. This means healing poison, removing bullets, fixing broken bones, and stitching up deep cuts. You can find the supplies for this everywhere, and it doesn't take a long time. This isn't a big deal, but hey, at least this time you won't get sent to Juevy for playing doctor with this boy :). The main gameplay is still pretty much the same, almost exactly the same. The story is basically in the 1960's or around that time. You're in the jungles of Soviet Russia, trying to stop a group of people wanting to rule the Motherland. They have some pretty cool super powers. The environments don't change a lot unless you are in a building, or...are in a building. The boss battles are very intense. I mean gritting your teeth, muscles tensed, no time to drink your Mt. Dew intense. They are all fought in different ways, The sniper, the Flamer, the bee farmer, and some others are all gonna stand in your way from completing your mission. There are a couple of environments that come to mind, I won't describe them so that I won't spoil them for you, but there are two places, which you will recognize when you get there. The final boss fight, and the river of death. The sound in this game is also tremendous, and during some of the cutscenes you can see through a Snake's eye view.
Bottom Line:
Graphics 9.5/10
They are absolutely gorgeous. The backgrounds are alive, and everything looks realistic, but there is no CG videos. I know MGS has never had CG, but who wouldn't wanna see Snake in high resolution?
Sound 9.5/10
As I said, the sound is good, very good, stunning, and the voice acting let's call this excellent as well.
Gameplay 8/10
The gameplay is either slow or fast paced. It's fun overall, but it can get repetitive. Still, it's not a bring down for the game.
Challenge 8/10
You get to pick the level of difficulty. I'd guess that whatever difficulty level you choose, is the one that suits you best, that would be why you chose it I guess.
Overall 9/10
This game is for everyone. There is nobody who wouldn't like this game. It definetely deserves the praise it gets. This game is getting cheap. The online mode in Subsistance isn't superbly amazing, but you and a few friends may find it fun. If you think that you won't be playing online, then the original version will work fine. Once again, Hideo Kojima delivers, and in a big way. Thank you Konami.
