Halo is one of the greatest first person shooters ever created and a huge reason for the success of the Xbox. With Halo's fresh ideas, great storyline, brilliant graphic and incredibly fun to play both in single or multiplayer, it's no wonder.
The game is set in the year 2552, and human kind has settled on other planets due to overpopulation. A short time ago, the human race had contacted a group of aliens known as the Covenant. It seems these nasty aliens are the fanatical religious types who believe the human race is an affront to the gods, therefore declaring a holy war upon us!
You play Master Chief, a genetically enhanced super soldier who wears state of the art armor; this all makes you one very powerful soldier and one of the last chances of humanities survival.
The game starts off on a human warship known as The Pillar of Autumn. It is attacked by Covenant forces and is shot down and stranded on the amazing world of Halo, you and the surviving members of the UNSC have to fight your way to freedom, along the way uncovering the mysteries of Halo.
The visuals are absolutely brilliant, the environments are big and beautiful, the characters are detailed, the explosions look awesome, and gun battles blaze up the scenery nicely. It was a great introduction to the Xbox's capabilities.
The music is wonderful, it will change depending on what's happening on screen, it conveys the atmosphere perfectly and really draws you into the game and sets the moods well, the SFX back this up with perfection.
The game is so simple to pick up and heaps of fun. Not since Golden Eye on the N64 has a FPS delivered such a great sense of control, brilliant movement and enjoyable gameplay. The controls are set up nicely, right trigger shoots, and left trigger throws grenades. Aiming you shoots and throws is super smooth and responsive, which adds to the fun. You can only carry to weapons at a time and switching is done with the Y button. You can also deliver super powerful melee attacks using the B button.
The number of weapons available isn't massive but the variation is very balanced, sniper rifle, pistol, shot gun, assault rifle and a rocket launcher. There is also an array of alien weapons and weapons that are mounted on vehicles.
There are various vehicles both human and alien types. They can be tricky to get the hang of as you drive them and control the mounted weapons at the same time, but once you do they become a lot of fun and important in your overall quest. Going from on foot then quickly jumping into a vehicle is all seamless; you allies will also jump in with you and add to the fire power which is great.
Multiplayer is another thing I haven't seen this good since Golden Eye. It is great fun for 1-4 players on one Xbox or you can use a system link and have 16 players. The maps are great and there are plenty of game modes to choose. This will keep you coming back for a very long time, as its masses of fun. You can also play 2 players co-operative, which is also a heap of fun.
Halo is pure brilliance, one of the best FPS's ever, and the single reason many people now own Xboxes. Master Chief Sir welcome to the party!
