EVO is one of those games that next to no one has heard of.  Published by Enix in the early 90's, EVO puts you in the role of a creature who is appointed by Gaia to guide evolution through its various stages during the history.  Along your journey you will meet creatures who are attempting to halt evolution for one reason or another, and it is up to you to stop them.

The Graphics hold up pretty well for EVO, considering we're talking about a 12 year old Super Nintendo title.  The sprites have a vibrant, cartoony feel to them and are well animated.  This is not the pinnacle of SNES graphics, but there are much, much worse looking games out there.

The music is generally very well done.  Many tracks are catchy and hardly any are annoying.  The boss theme in particular is a cool piece.  Sound effects are standard SNES fare, and are neither a strength or weakness of the game.

EVO is a very fun, if not simple Action Rpg.  Gameplay basically consists of killing the various creatures on a given stage for evo points, and then powering up your creature by spending the points on upgrades like better legs, a horn, or more powerful jaws.  Upon beating the end boss for a chapter, you evolve into the next archetype of evolution (fish to amphibian for example) and begin the upgrade process over again.

In true SNES tradition, some bosses are frustratingly hard (queen Bee), while others are a piece of cake (most bosses afterwards).  Gamers who thrive on the old Contra and Metroid titles will have no problem with the difficulty, but those of use with less than lightning reflexes may end up tossing a controller or two during the course of the game.

It's a shame this game is virtually unknown, as it would make a perfect GBA port.  If you run across a copy of the game, I'd suggest picking it up.  At 5 to 10 hours, it isn't the longest game out there, but experimenting with the various evolution upgrades adds a lot of replayability.
