I've heard a lot of good things about GTA3 and I decided to purchase it and it was way more then I expected. First thing that I did was go and beat on a pedestrian, ya and acquiring a baseball bat makes things even sweeter. I still to this day enjoy smacking people over the head with a bat. Like in all other GTA's you get to drive cars but the difference is the cars are way better. The biggest or should I say best part about this game is that it's not in an overhead view. This means like never before you can get right into the action and witness the GTA3 experience first hand.

Game-play-9.3/10
There are around thirty different types of cars each with unique attributes. Driving the cars doesn't take any skill like other driving games and anyone that has trouble handling the cars should maybe lay off the caffeine. Just like real cars you can only push these cars as far as they will go. Push too far like colliding with too many cars or taking too many bullets to the car will cause it to explode, this is an amazing part of the game because the tires, doors and bumper all fly off in what-knows direction in a fire ball explosion leaving behind a burnt frame. Well…if you didn't get out in time it will prove you demise.
Your arsenal includes around 9 weapons like an assault rifle and a baseball bat. Each weapon serves its own individual purpose not leaving some weapons never used. The design of all the weapons is phenomenal. When I first saw the commercial for the game I was in shock about what you could literally do in this game with the guns. You're able to go out into the streets in the middle of the day and shoot down cars right in the streets, of course the smart drivers speed away or come after you. One other thing you can do with the guns is shoot pedestrians, oh how fun this is, run up to any pedestrian, not a cop and lock on to them with the red circle then fire away. They run away in sheer terror but just chase after them and make your kill.
The environment, liberty city, is divided into three parts each with its own special places. Like Portland has the garbage dump, etc. All three parts are almost equal in shape and size but from playing the game you can tell the bigger ones from the smaller ones. Each island has street roads, trails, alleys and grass to drive on. They really did a good job when they made each island have different types of buildings, also each island has a theme to it like Portland is the industrial/city part with businesses and apartment buildings, I've never seen anything other then apartment buildings in this part, weird. Besides the themes there's also different cars that you can find in one island but not another, mostly gang cars. Also full hospitals, fire stations and police departments are there to aid you.
During you adventure in Liberty city you will encounter many different gangs that inhabit different areas of the game, like the Mafia in saint marks…I think. The gangs range from petty street gangs to Columbian drug lords. All gangs have different weapons they use to keep they territory theirs.
Like gangs they all wear the same uniforms and drive the same cars, just be careful 'cause once you get on their bad sides your on there bad sides forever.
During the game you will have to complete tasks or missions from people you interact with in the game. These people span from low-end Mafia guys to high ranked businessmen. Like you would expect the missions will start out easy, infact the first mission is madly easy, then work their way to pretty tough, but you can handle it. Along with the main mission there are side quests like: make all unique jumps or collect 100 secret packages. Once and a while you mite want to check into your stats to see what you need to accomplish. The status sheet in the options tells every thing that you need to know like overall percentage, how many missions you have do, where you are in the side quests and such.
Of course like any game it has flaws otherwise this would have gotten a 10 instead of a 9.3. The biggest annoyance is the lack of swimming ability that the guy has, that's an understatement he has no swimming ability…he can't swim. You would think this would be minor but the islands are surrounded by water so you bound to run into some now or then. It's the only flaw I really notices enough to talk about, I'm implying that there are more but non-that you'll care about. I hate falling into the water and not being able to swim. Come on rock star even in Vice city you can't swim and that came out after this game.

Graphics-7.1/10
The cars in GTA3 look amazing. They really did a good job designing the cars. I was a bit skeptical about how they would look considering what the attitude towards the games graphics were from talking about them online and from some of my buds that had the game. I don't know what they were on because the cars look superb. There are obvious horrid looking cars like the manana and kick &%$ looking cars like the banshee. The color schemes for some cars are all wrong c'mon have you ever seen a pink car driving down the road…well maybe once. On the other hand there are some great looking cars with metallic red, blue and green that actually have some buff on them, but no reflections.
All weapons except the grenade you can probably see your guy holding at a good enough view that you'll know what the gun looks like, if you can't just look for the item in a secret spot the take a closer look at it. For this game and its graphics not being the best around they did a respectable job with the gun design. The most captivating part of the guns is that you can see the bullets coming out of the gun. Most games I have don't show the bullets, maybe im just less fortunate.
I can't begin to tell you how beautiful Liberty city looks. Besides the almost constant dark clouds and the city looking like a dreary horror movie scene, especially the red light district, it still looks pleasant. I really wasn't impressed with the way everything in the city looked compared to everything else i.e. the cars, guns, etc. You really have to see it to have an opinion, or maybe my judgment has been skewed from playing vice city, I don't really think so.
The character structure in this game is poor. All the pedestrians, mission people, and [you] look rushed. Some people have legs that are really thick on the upper leg then get really thin by the ankles. There's just odd deformities like this on most characters.

Sound-8.4/10
Most of the sound you will ever hear will be coming from the radio as you cruise along. Some stations you will like other you will not, it's a personal preference. The stations range from classical to whacked out talk radio. The FX is Okay, not over the top but not trying to prove something. Again the most FX your gong to hear is the guns. They all sound the way there supposed to. I think that, that would have made things less enjoyable if the guns sounded like big bangs instead of the actual guns. The last part is the voice acting. I say it is all right, but then again it's way away from being good. Although the actors they picked fit the parts they were doing and they did an adequate job, I thought they could have been better.

Story-5.9/10
You're involved in a bank robbery with this woman. While escaping she turns around and shoots you and you take all the heat for the robbery and get caught. They're taking you to prison when a bomb goes off on the bridge your currently crossing. You escape from the patty wagon and take a car with you friend 8-ball to get a change of clothes. From there he hooks you up to business. From playing the game I'm guessing that the whole objective of the game is to get back at the people who framed you and have some fun on the way.

Overall-8/10
This game has amazing qualities that have never been seen before. I highly recommend this game as a buy, not a rent because you will have so much fun that when the returning time comes you'll want to rent it again that or you wont beat it and want to know what happens at the end of the game. This game is fun and really addicting, especially getting in the cars and causing havoc around town. The way they brought this game together in the way they did made this game one of my favorite games of all time.
