In this GC installment of Mario Kart, you'll find it quite similar to its predecessors. The 2 person cart system is just another facade to add more Nintendo friendly characters into the fray. The new world circuits are inviting but some should have been completely left out. And even the multiplayer levels seem to have lost its replay value.
Toad is still the fastest and most cart friendly drivers. When I first played the game and found to discover that he was not an initial character, I was enraged. But when I started unlocking secrets I figured that Nintendo just might be stupid enough to make him a secret character.
The characters give you different special items while racing, which in my opinion, was a bad idea. When I trying to win a race at the last second and find that Koopa and Paratroopa are the only ones capable of 3 red shells... well...
Coming behind from 8th place isn't as effective anymore. Thunderbolts don't have their squishing powers anymore and AI seems to give you single bananas and green shells still.
And where the hell is the JUMP option?! Now if you get hit and face the wrong way, one must actually drive around.
But now the good points.
It still plays like a Mario Kart. The fun factor is still there to a degree. Perhaps its just me making adjustments from the previous Karts. Some levels should have been made earlier like the Baby Mario Circuit where one must lap around 7 times. There is a bit more strategy in placing your Kart drivers into the right kart. So maybe I am being a bit over-critical, but then again, I did expect more.
