Everytime someone says games based on movies suck, I agree and so does most people, but we forget about this rare speciment. I mean rare in the fact that it's good, great, EXCELLENT!. Like in the movies, Riddick is the main character and you control him. Nothing special yet but now let's talk about the gameplay and graphics.
The graphics are very detailed and have the same feel as Doom 3 which I think it uses the same engine but don't take my word for it. The level of detail is very noticeable and admirable but this is what brings me to a flaw. I think the game is too strict on hardware for what it's worth I mean hey, I play it with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1.5 GB of RAM and a nVidia GeforceFX5200 AGP 128mb on low details and the frame rate is down right bad and almost unplayable at times but I got enough of it to have fun since I'm not too picky. Being hard on hardware isn't really a bad thing about the game but honestly, with my current hardware, I run Quake 4 better on lower settings so maybe it's all because the modeling. Why modeling? Well I'm ready to say that the characters in Chronicles of Riddick: EFBB have more polygons than they should have. This would be a developpement flaw which I consider a flaw in the game but then again, it's just a thought, maybe that's not the problem at all. Above all, I haven't seen real problems with this game, it's a very fine looking action game and you can easily get a good enough graphics card for this game better than a Geforce FX5200 which is out dated in my opinion and I'm getting a Sapphire Radeon X800 XT AGP8x 256mb next week. Coming back on the modeling subject. The Characters are really great looking and the voice acting is pretty immersive in some way. That means the voice are well done. Vin Diesel and Xzibit over all others are some that lended their voices for the game. I'm not too sure what to say about the weapons, they kind of dissapointed me because the noises they make while shooting isn't really satisfying and feels wimpy. Environments, well more specificly, Interiors, are impressive at first but after you've played games like Doom 3 and Quake 4, you get use to it but by the time you read this review, I wouldn't be surprised that you've already beaten this game anyway. I'm mostly saying this for those who may hesitate to try it and haven't yet. I'm pretty sure the price lowered since the release so I'd say it is worth to check out but before that, I've got more details on the game concerning the gameplay.
Escape From Butcher Bay has intuitive gameplay, but only for the melee combat. Gunplay is like your average First Person Shooter but doesn't feel as good because like I said before, the sound FX and maybe other tiny details take the love away from killing someone. You'll go through areas without even caring if there is anybody but I try to use my fists as much as possible because that's where the fun is and there are special moves «ą la» Splinter Cell that you can pull off like the Sleeper hold or rear choke or however you want to call it, well you can do that. Physics are also great in fighting "sessions" but for the overall game physics, there could be some problems that are laughable.
