True Crime L.A. was an interesting game and really my introduction into this genre. I initially missed out on the GTA series (I kept hearing stories about beating hookers senseless for information). True Crime is by no means a game designed to bring out your inner Dr. Phil, but nevertheless, sometimes it just downright fun.
You have a solid mix of action. At times you find yourself racing across town trying to beat a timer. At other times your stealth skills will be tested as you skulk behind the scenes of the chinese mafia. But really the bread and butter for the game involves hopping in the fastest car you own (or "borrow" from a citizen) and chasing down the bad guys.
Although True Crime is a rather straight forward linear action game, you have opportunities to finish the game as either a "bad cop" or a "good cop." You will more than likely find yourself going back and trying the game as both, just to see the multiple endings.
I found the game enjoyable, but not really replayable and recommend that if you buy it, you buy it used.
