I don't really know why i bought this game. But a few reasons where: MMORPG with no monthly fee, nice graphics and just an impulsive thought that said; buy this game! The cool game case with 2 cd's and 2 booklets of both around like 70 pages of game info and history of Tyria (the game world) and a reference card make you even more anxious about the game. I'll just say it at the start of this review this game is worth buying.
Though i never really played other online-rpg's(only betas) I've noticed and read that this one has some special game features; the most important one is that you have your own copy of the game world, this means that in the guidwars world you wont see live players unless you invite them, or when you are in a international area. On the other hand you will see real life people in cities and camps. Maybe this sounds strange and maybe it is... but for me it works! You don't want to be walking in a creepy dungeon when all of a sudden you see 20 people having a conversation about the weather forecast, now do ya? So i think this is rather smart!
The graphics look really cool and the recommended specs really do work great. I have a ATI9000 (shame on me) and it works smooth as butter on highest detail. The flair/light effects are amazing when you walk into a cave it will slowly get darker, in one smooth move (like swoosh). In sunny places it looks like paradise and in evil places it looks like it is really evil.
The sound is comforting, when you walk in the sun you hear the birds and maybe a little river and all that stuff. Pigs go *oink* and monsters go *grawll* all very nicely done. The sound is, as in real life, very detailed. There aren't that much cinema tics but the ones that are there are with voice acting, its not top of the bill (and the mouths don't move). But after some Main-storyline mission you get rewarded with an in game movie that will keep you interested in the story. For the rest of the game people talk text-based. Of course u can use teamspeak or ventrilo for your guild communication...
Guild communication? Yeah, the name of this game is not chosen randomly you can make some sort of clans that can fight other guilds or do missions (big quests). It's really nice to have some other players where you can easily get in touch with. You help them, they help you, at least in my guild, and there is nothing else but a bunch of people who want to play a game. You can recognize Guild-members by there Guild capes, that the leader of the Guild can buy. I think those capes are really fun little extra!
As official game sites give this game a high mark I hope that there will be a lot of dudes who will be playing this game. Hope to cya in GuildWars!
