I rented this game from Blockbuster last night and its going back tonight in hopes of getting Forza Motorsports. I was looking for a good Gran Tourismo sim type racing game where you win money and use it to buy and upgrade cars which this game does fairly well. There are plenty of cars you can unlock and race, and lots of upgrade options. What this game seriously lacks is realism.
One thing that always irritates me on racing games where you upgrade your cars is that as you upgrade, so do the AI, so your never ahead. One thing I like about Gran Tourisom is you can still upgrade your cars and race them on beginner tracks (its been a while since i have played it). You will kick ass but on some levels thats fun too. You don't have to increase your difficulty level just because you added a turbo. In games like Midnight Club you never get ahead. Other than the coolness factor there isn't really any incentive to upgrade. All that happens is the game starts moving so fast you can't react and all your doings is trying to control an object thats crashing into everything in its way. And forget about using the nitrous button. They should call it the "wreck me" button.
Now probably the worst part of the game is its realism. Your in a tricked out car doing 200 mph and the police pull up beside you saying "pull over". You hit nitrous and (assuming you don't wreck) they keep right with you. They are just there to make it harder but come on. Then there was the race I was in. I was driving a Lexus IS300, fully tricked out. I was in a race with an H2, and Escalade and a pickup of some kind. I was going down the straightaway at 150 and the H2 goes by me on nitrous like I'm standing still. I'm not asking to turn this game into a true sim, but at least keep the cars somewhat within their realistic handling limits.
