Guild Wars is a fantastic video game made by a fantastic company. Not NCSoft's first foray into the MMORPG world, but certainly one of the best to date.
The game itself is sometimes referred to as an online competitive role playing game, mainly because the only parts that are truly massive as far as players go are the towns, the rest of the game is private, in a sense. You can recruit members for a party and go out adventuring in your own world. WoW users may know this as an instance; well the whole game is essentially an instance. This prevents spawnkilling, kill stealing, and item stealing, very well.
The game allows you to pick one of six classes and a secondary class later on. Combine this with tons of skills and you can create a unique character every time you play the game, and you'll never accidently find a character who looks like you.
One of the major perks about this game is it's free online play. All you need to do is buy the video game and you can play on NCSoft's servers for the rest of your life. And, since the company that hosts Guild Wars, ArenaNet, is owned entirely by NCSoft, you can bet this arrangement won't end very soon. The game is also designed to automatically download updates while you play, not while you log on, which is another nice benefit.
Due to the massive skill system as well, success in PvP relies on skill, not on time spent playing. Tactics win, ultimately.
Combine this with the actual guild wars within the game - Guilds competing for online supremecy, against eachother, and against other countries. Often while playing you'll read about one country securing the favor of the gods over another.
Guild Wars is a new kind of MMORPG; a kind that rewards talent over time, a game that knows you spent $50 on a game and don't want to spend anymore, a type of game that is constantly improving for your benefit.
Guild Wars is an excellent game for MMORPG fans and almost any gamer in general, I would really reccomend buying it.
