The new installment to the bond series gets itself back on track with the existing film narrative. After the debacle that was Rogue Agent, the EA Bond series returns back to form, giving Nightfire the coveted standard shooter trophy.
Bond has kept on track with the third person view that was seen in Everything Or Nothing and it works impressively well. This time round the game is entirely based on the films plot and with sean connery making a vocal appearance this really adds a genuine sparkle to the games appeal. Starting out on the first mission with a jet pack over Big Ben and the houses of Parliament is thrilling and sets the score for the levels to come, well the levels that are devoid of having to drive anyway.
The levels in this game are simply huge, the maps are ultra realistic and the effortless way bond kills the villains are replicated with both an easy targeting system and a few combo moves that are both easy to pull off and look very effective. Some of the best levels we've encountered on the bean is the Russian congress base, where Q Copters are needed to blow up security panels and access doors and spiralling special ops come crashing through the roofs trying to kill you, more than adds to the thrill.
For hardcore fans of third person shooters, the game doesn't remain easy throughout, the jet pack mission in the russian underground is particularly hard, which if you escape is more of a case of luck than skill. The ray of weapons aren't exactly thrilling but their is a wide enough scope to switch between weapons and pulverise your opponents. Perhaps what is magical about this game is not only the massive simgle player mode with a wealth of unlockables, but instead the multiplayer mode.
Over 8 maps that range from in game levels cut down to size and the free use of jetpacks and vehicles are a real buzz and the hidden traps that you can set on your opponents are the ultimate satisfaction. For example: The silo level, you have to find the missle codes and arm the missle for takeoff, the player outside of the contained zone will burn to death. In the hedgemaze their are both door traps and fire traps, this is alot more inventive than the apparantly legendary Halo multiplayer map, this kicks its candy ass.
What we love about the multiplayer mode so much is the sheer fact that you can now roll across the floor, sneek behind landscape and leap across floors in a bid to avoid being shot and when you combine this with random powerups such as the Golden Gun and the beautiful scenes of Venice within a frag fest, all I can say is WOW! This game is good, damn good and has a replay value second to none.
PROS
* Amazing multiplayer
* Decent storyline and narrative
* Nice targeting system
* Multiple death sequences
CONS
* The car driving missions suck
* Flying a jet pack when being shot by hundreds also is frustrating
* Only 8 multiplayer maps...Boo!
VERDICT: 8/10 - Essential Purchase - Re-ignite the 128bit bond fragfest, its back up the top and its legendary
