Yes, I'm humble enough to admit that Monster Truck Madness is the PC game that I cut my teeth on. I've been a gamer for years, but exclusively on consoles. (It's a long story.)
I'm grateful that I started with a game like Monster Truck Madness. The premise is straightforward: drive fast to win the races, or explore the terrain far and wide while having a heaping pile of fun!
The four modes of racing are Drag, Circuit, Rally, and Tournament. There are a good variety of tracks in Circuit mode , but unfortunately, only three to pick from in Rally mode. The Rally races offer a huge variety of interesting scenery, secret roadways, and tricks.
The physics of the trucks seems to be spot on, but I have to confess that I never rode in one of these beasts! And for its era, I think MTM offers great graphics, even as I write this review in '05. Fans of the real thing will appreciate the detail of the trucks and the wild crashes, with nary a scratch on the trucks. (I think damage modeling was still a newer concept when MTM was released in '96.)
As a bonus, MTM doesn't need big PC hardware horsepower; a first-generation Pentium with at least 16MB of RAM and a modest 3D accelerator will get you rolling (pardon the pun).
With all things told, Monster Truck Madness came preinstalled on my aging hard drive and it will stay there because it offers some decent racing thrills for both racing game aficionados and casual racers.
